City or town of residence: Denver; I have lived here for 22 years.
Profession: I own a math-tutoring business and am a finance consultant for small- and medium-sized companies.
Related elected-office or public-service experience: Served on the Stapleton United Neighbors board of directors for three-plus years.
Why are you seeking this office?
I am running for treasurer because I believe we can do better than the status quo, and because I want to see us live up to our values: that health care is a human right and that everyone deserves a first-class public education.
What makes you the most qualified person for the position?
At a time when the state faces many fiscal challenges, we need a treasurer with a strong finance background. I am most qualified because I have an undergraduate education in economics and a graduate degree in finance and management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I also have more than 30 years' experience in business and finance, including working as a senior finance executive at a large public company. I've had a lot of success in my life, but I've also steered the small business I own through some tough times, and I think it is how we handle adversity that really counts.
What would your top two priorities be if elected?
First, as treasurer, I plan to review contracts between PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association) and Wall Street firms that charge PERA more than $130 million per year. I plan to bring more transparency to PERA's investment processes and ensure that these contracts are the best investment for PERA members and Colorado taxpayers.
Second, I plan to move the state's money out of Wells Fargo and into a state-based bank or credit union. Wells Fargo has defrauded millions of consumers and has been poorly managed. I believe most Coloradans would like to see their state's money with a bank that aligns with their values.
What else should the voters know about you?
I am a Colorado native and have been involved in my community for decades. I do not accept any corporate PAC (political-action committee) money because I believe it has corrupted our politics. I received more than 1,000 votes at the state assembly because I believe my message resonates with voters.
