The Broadway Brew Supply parking lot was lined with individuals brewing their own favorite recipe on May 5 as they joined in the celebration of National Brew Day.
“It has been a busy day so far,” owner Jose Quinones said about 1 p.m. “We have had a great turnout. We expected about 50 people and we have already exceeded that number. We have had new people come by to check out brewing their own beer as well as veteran brewers who stopped in to buy supplies or just see what was happening on National Brew Day.”
He said he stocks ingredients and equipment to brew beer, wine and cider. The store offers classes in brewing. For information on the classes, visit the website at www.broadwaybrewsupply.com or call the store at 303-781-4680.
The event is good for the store, Quinones said, drawing people he probably wouldn’t see as well as quite a few regular customers who just wanted to say hi.
“We have been here almost 18 months and one of the big things I am noticing is the customer coming in to start brewing is going into more completed processes,” he said. “It used to be that people new to brewing went into the simple training-wheels processes until they got some experience making their own spirits.”
Nathan Tarte said he is relatively new to brewing.
“I started brewing a little over two years ago,” the Littleton resident said. “I try to brew every two or three weeks and try new things. I do three-gallon batches and invite my friends over to join me. I like the pilsners and the stouts.”
In the parking lot, Laura Barber was brewing a batch of beer.
“I like beer, my landlord brewed beer and I decided to try it,” she said. “I got lucky and won my equipment here during Broadway Brew Supply’s one-year anniversary.”
She said she brews a batch of beer about every two weeks.
“The fermentation process takes 14 days and if I brew every two weeks I always have beer ready to serve,” the Englewood resident said. “When I brew a batch of beer, I dry the grain, mix it with peanut butter and flour and bake it to make treats for my dog Sadie. She loves them.”
She and her roommate Cindy Menjiar were brewing a recipe to make Puerto Rican beer.
“The hurricane destroyed the beer breweries on Puerto Rico,” Menjivar said. “We have the recipe to make the beer that is a summer brew that is very light and refreshing. I work at the Boys and Girls Club. One of my co-workers is Puerto Rican so we are brewing this batch of beer for her.”
Justin Haxton was using a copper coil as a heat transfer to cool down the brew.
“I have been brewing beer for seven years,” he said. “I started brewing ales and I just moved up the more complicated process to brew my first lager. It is a lot of fun, and I really I really enjoy the brewing process and the beer it produces.”
