Letter to the editor: Kudos to Fey

A small correction is needed for the recent “Council debates LIFT appointments” article by David Gilbert.

Gilbert mentions council member Carol Fey’s amendment to “not start interviews for new board members until the city has received a report on the total number of vacancies.” However, that was not the amendment made by Ms. Fey.  Her amendment, as stated on the city’s website, was to “require interviews not begin until the council has received a recommendation from the LIFT Board on the exact number of vacancies as the LIFT Board understands it and that the interview process be open to the public.” Fey’s motion indicates an expectation that the LIFT board will meet and make a recommendation to council on the number of vacancies.

However, I have been told by city staff that LIFT will not meet in order to make the recommendation. Apparently, there are certain recommendations that LIFT can make to council that do not require them to meet.

I wonder what other recommendations LIFT can make to council without holding a meeting?

It is worthwhile to mention that the three new councilmembers (Driscoll, Elrod and Schlachter) all voted no to Fey’s amendment that would ensure the appointment process would be open and transparent from LIFT’s recommendation to council’s appointments.

Thank you to Carol Fey for providing for an open and transparent process — great job for a newly elected council member!
