Gaspare Licata grew up in a household where cooking and baking was the family business. The Sicily, Italy native left his country and family when he was only 13 to learn more about the family trade. He wanted to work with chocolate, learn how to bake wedding cakes and more — so he went out on an adventure.
Licata traveled throughout different parts of Europe learning the ins and outs of cooking and baking before eventually settling down in the United States in 1972. His adventure paid off and led to a career as a personal chef for the Los Angeles Rams, catering for the Kennedy family and ownership of restaurants and bakeries in areas including Italy, California, Pueblo and Aurora.
Now, Licata has his eyes set on South Broadway in downtown Englewood. With his daughter Vincenza Licata, and her boyfriend, Brian Meadows, the trio rebranded the Duffer Haus sports bar site into a full-blown Italian restaurant. The former Duffer Haus space is now Gallo Italian Supper Club and Bake, located at 3470 S. Broadway. The Italian restaurant opened at the beginning of October.
“I've opened up a few places that have been successful, and I think South Broadway has more potential than any place I've been. It just takes time,” said Gaspare, who is in charge of the kitchen.
At the front of the restaurant is a rooster statue. Gallo translates to rooster in Italian, and the animal is seen as a symbol of good luck in Italian culture, according to Meadows. On the left side of the restaurant is a bakery and deli where customers can pick up Italian sweets, meat and more. Toward the back of the restaurant, behind the bar, is a dining room with authentic Italian decorations straight from Sicily.
“It's family owned and family operated. All of the staff you see in here are friends and family of the owners,” said Meadows. “It's very important for us to keep this as a mom and pop shop. We like that family feel, that family vibe.”
As far as the menu goes, every dish is made from scratch. Meadows said one of the most popular items on the restaurant's menu is the arancini — risotto stuffed with Bolognese and mozzarella or green chili and cheddar. Other offerings from the restaurant include pastas, pizzas, calzones, lasagna and desserts.
“If you go to Italy, you're going to get overfed. They love to cook, and It's very well shown within their meals,” said Meadows. “Our portions, they're family style. They're big.”
The restaurant is planning on having a rebranding party sometime in the middle of November that will include live performances. It's open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
The 3400 block of South Broadway has seen some change this year with new businesses like Brewability, a brewery that took over the Brew on Broadway location, and Zomo Asian + American Eatery joining the area.
“We might just have to start calling these two blocks of Englewood 'restaurant row.' A place where you can enjoy cuisine from all over the world, sample the styles of various chefs and join our local celebrities at some of their favorite haunts,” said David Carroll, executive director for the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce. Gallo Italian Supper Club and Bake is part of the chamber, an organization that promotes its business members and other Englewood businesses.
