Beginning June 1, Colorado motor-vehicle owners will have to pay
late fees of up to $100 for failing to register their vehicles on
time.
A new state law passed this year requires a per-month late fee
assessment of $25 for every month past an owner’s grace period, up
to a maximum fee of $100. The fee is in addition to the regular
renewal fees.
The Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder’s Office is responsible
for collecting the fees from vehicle owners in the county.
“I want citizens to be aware of this new registration so they
won’t be surprised when they come into my office,” Clerk and
Recorder Nancy Doty said.
The late fees will apply to expired registrations, temporary
permits and to vehicle owners who move from out of state and do not
register their vehicles within 90 days. Vehicles purchased by
Colorado residents will be assessed late fees 61 days after the
purchase date if they have not been registered by that time.
A vehicle used to operate a business is exempt from the late fee
if the vehicle has not been used on a public highway in Colorado
for one full registration cycle.
Likewise, a vehicle owner who is active in the military and
serving outside Colorado when the registration grace period expires
will be exempt.
