EHS to add boys swimming, girls golf

Englewood High School’s spring sports schedule increases with the addition of two new sports — boys swimming and girls golf.

“The kids got this rolling,” Pirates athletic director Paul Evans said. “Each of the two groups got organized and brought the request to me. I took it to the school district so we plan to field teams in boys swimming and girls golf for the spring season.”

The Pirates girls golf team will play in the Metro West Region and Englewood’s swimming team will compete in the Jefferson County Class 4A League.

Practice for the two teams, along with the other spring sports — baseball, boys and girls track, girls soccer and lacrosse — begins in late February and competition begins in March.

Englewood has never fielded a girls golf team. Evans said a group of about a dozen girls talked to Pirates boys golf coach Brian DeHerrera about getting the sport started. He suggested they contact Evans.

“Most of the girls interested in golf have played before and are juniors, so they could be with us for a couple seasons,” the athletic director said. “I believe they are very committed to helping the school get this program started and keeping it going so we are moving forward.”

He noted funding for the program hasn’t been decided but he noted the Broken Tee at Englewood Golf Course is a great partner with the boys golf team and has committed to providing the same level of support for the girls team.

Englewood had a boys swimming program for years. It went a way, made a return in 1997 but was once shelved because of a lack of participation.

“Here again, we had a core group of kids organized themselves and came asking if we could bring back the sport,” Evans said. “That one was pretty easy because the start up costs are inexpensive since all you need is swim suits plus we already have a pool.”
