Three four-year seats decided; two-year term incumbent was unopposed

Englewood voters were deciding the makeup of the Englewood Schools Board of Education in the election that ended Nov. 2.

Voters selected three of four candidates who were running for four-year seats, with the three top vote getters winning seats. Caty Husbands, who has been serving as the school board’s president, was unopposed in seeking a two-year seat.

In unofficial returns as of late Nov. 4, Julie Hoag, a part-time nurse at Swedish Medical Center, was leading the field for four-year seats with 32.4% of the vote, about 8-1/2 percentage points ahead of Duane Tucker, in second place with 23.9% of the total.

Hoag said that as a board member she will address why so many students, around 30%, choose to transfer from Englewood to another district.

Tucker is director of strategic procurement at the University of Colorado and previously served on the board. If his second-place position in the race holds, he would win a board seat.

Tucker said a crucial issue for him is to address students and staff who cannot live in Englewood and find ways to support them.

Meanwhile, two other candidates -- Steven Leflar and Andy Szekeres -- were just a third of a percentage point part as of late Nov. 4, with Szekeres trailing by 43 votes out of 13,421 votes counted up to that point.

Leflar, a helicopter flight instructor for the Department of Defense, has been serving on the school board. Leflar said that if re-elected, he wants to continue to support students having an active voice within the school district.

Szekeres, a campaign finance administrator for the City and County of Denver, said that if elected, he would be the first openly LGBTQ member of the board, something he said is important for representation among students. He also said a revamp of the district’s recruiting process would be a top priority as districts across the Denver metro area see during shortages due to COVID-19.
