Englewood Schools abruptly announces departure of Cherrelyn principal

Rebecca Orsund will no longer lead elementary

After spending only a little over a year as the principal at Cherrelyn Elementary School in Englewood, Rebecca Orsund will no longer hold that position, Englewood Schools has announced.

In a letter to parents on Dec. 3, Englewood Schools Superintendent Wendy Rubin announced the news. Orsund took over as principal at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. Julie McMorris, a spokesperson for Englewood Schools, said the district can't comment on the announcement, because it is a personnel matter.

“We realize that this news is sudden and unexpected, and we want to assure you that Cherrelyn will be in good hands moving forward,” Rubin's letter says.

Leigh Pytlinski, director at the Maddox Early Childhood Education Center in Englewood, will serve as principal at the school until winter break. Students begin break on Dec. 20. Following that, an interim principal will be named, and the school district will carry out a hiring process for a permanent principal.

Before becoming principal at Cherrelyn Elementary, Orsund was an assistant principal at Evergreen High School for two years. She also taught second, third, fourth and sixth grades in Jefferson and Douglas counties as well as in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Orsund also mentored teachers and worked with students as an instructional coach in Jefferson County.

“Thank you for bearing with us through this unforeseen change. Please know that Cherrelyn is a special community and everyone involved in this transition is committed to maintaining and even enhancing Cherrelyn during this process,” Rubin wrote.
