Armed with a warrant, agents from the Environmental Protection
Agency and Immigration Custom Enforcement Department searched the
Executive Recycling facilities at 3245 S. Platte River Drive.
Reportedly, about 35 agents arrived about 9:30 a.m. Jan. 22 to
conduct the search. Efforts to get additional information about the
search were unsuccessful.
Lori Hanson, special agent in charge of EPA’s criminal
investigation division in Denver, acknowledged the search took
place and said it was part of an ongoing criminal
investigation.
The ICE spokesman, Carl Rusnok, said from the Dallas Office that
ICE agents were members of the group that searched the business. He
said ICE participation was provided to assist the EPA. He added
that ICE was there because part of the agency’s job is enforcement
of U.S. export laws.
The company that recycles outdated electronic equipment was the
subject of a report on the television news show, “60 Minutes.” The
TV show tracked a ship container of electronic items from Executive
Recycling to Hong Kong that reportedly contained cathode-ray tubes
that contain lead and other toxic substances.
At the time, company president Brandon Richter called the report
unfair and stated his firm sold the equipment in the container to a
Vancover woman for $62,000 and shipped it to China for her.
Efforts to contact Richter for comment on Jan. 22 were
unsuccessful.
