Skye Masterson, Nathan Detroit, Miss Sarah Brown, Miss Adelaide,
Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Benny Southstreet, Harry the Horse, Big Jule
and more… Englewood High’s actors will bring those colorful Damon
Runyon characters to the Fisher Theatre this weekend.
Starting with “Fugue for Tinhorns:” “I’ve got the horse right
here… His name is Paul Revere…” this American classic is non-stop
entertainment.
“Guys and Dolls” will be presented at 7 p.m. March 6 and March 7
in the Fisher Theatre at Englewood High School, directed by Bill
Ambron.
With music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling
and Abe Burrows, the original Broadway hit in 1950 was based on
journalist Damon Runyon’s short stories of Broadway and 42nd
Street, “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and “Blood Pressure.”
“Guys and Dolls” won the 1951 Tony Award and has been widely
produced ever since in schools, community theaters and professional
venues. A film version was released in 1955 with Marlon Brando as
Masterson and Frank Sinatra as always — in — trouble Nathan
Detroit. It just reopened on Broadway.
Adelaide has tried to get Detroit to marry her for years. “A
Person Could Develop a Cold…” Masterson bets Detroit that he can
lure the proper Salvation Army gal Sarah to go to Havana with him.
The cops are out to break up the World’s Oldest Continuous Floating
Crap Game… Lots going on!
