The investigation into a stolen vehicle case led to police
chasing and capturing a 28-year-old man who allegedly tried to pull
a gun on the officers.
The case began about 9:30 a.m. Aug. 22 when a routine check on a
vehicle parked in the 200 block of West Grand Avenue identified it
as stolen.
Perry Schellpfeffer, police information officer, said that when
police officers came to check on the stolen vehicles, a man came
out of one of the apartments, got into the vehicle and started to
drive off. Police tried unsuccessfully to stop him and he got
away.
Officers then returned to the area to try to identify the man
driving the stolen vehicle and went to talk to a man who came out
of the same apartment.
Schellpfeffer said the man ran and officers chased him. They
caught him near the top of one of the apartment complex’s
staircases and one of the officers saw he was trying to pull a
.45-caliber pistol out of his waistband. There was a brief struggle
and the suspect fell part way down the stairs but managed to get to
his feet and continue to try to outrun police.
The chase went through the parking lot behind the apartment
buildings as the man headed toward Belleview Avenue.
Officers caught up with him near the street but he allegedly
fought with them. After an unsuccessful effort to subdue him with a
Taser, officer managed to wrestle him to the ground and arrest
him.
The suspect was taken to Swedish Medical Center, where he was
reported to be in stable condition. He could face a variety of
charges in the case.
During the effort to catch the man, an Englewood officer drove
west on Belleview to try to cut off the suspect. When the officer
pulled the car up onto the curb as a barrier, the vehicle slid on
the wet grass and crashed into a tree.
The officer suffered minor injuries and the car was damaged.
