Six apply for school board appointment

Posted

Seven residents have tossed hats into the ring as candidates to be appointed to fill the remainder of Shelley Thompson’s term on the Englewood Board of Education.

The school district received applications from Kali Crespin, Gale Ogden, Sandy Stevens, Natasha Karges, Jacqui Todeschi, Allen Peoples and Michelle Gonzalez by the April 16 deadline.

To apply, an individual had to be at least 18 years old, live in Englewood School District and must have been a registered voter for at least 12 months before the appointment.

The seven candidates each filled out a one-page application that asked for name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address. Additionally, the candidate is asked to briefly state why he or she wants to serve on the school board, the strengths, experience and qualities the individual brings to the board and what the candidate feels is the district’s biggest challenges.

The vacancy was created by Thompson’s March 31 resignation. Ruled required the resignation because Thompson and her family moved out of the district.

Rules require the four remaining school board members establish a process and appoint a replacement by May 30.

The board’s tentative plans are to discuss the application at the April 22 school board work session. The work session begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the Englewood Middle School library.

The appointee will serve the remainder of Thompson’s term that expires in November. At that time, the appointee can run for election to the board for a full term.

School board members receive no pay for their service and the term of office is four years. Like members of the Englewood City Council, members are limited to serving only two consecutive terms on the school board.
