Six high school and college students are receiving scholarships from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Arapahoe and Douglas counties for their exemplary dedication and commitment to important work in the behavioral health field.
The scholarships will be presented at the Behavioral Health Seeds of Hope Scholarship Awards Event on Thursday, April 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the Hilton Denver Inverness, 200 Inverness Drive W., near Centennial. The event is open to the public.
The recipients are:
• Brooke Benning, ThunderRidge High School
• Henry Campos, Englewood High School
• Chloe Johnson, Arapahoe High School
• Aiden Kneller, Cherry Creek High School
• Nancy Romo, Metropolitan State University of Denver
• Bryn Tillman, University of Colorado-Boulder
NAMI Arapahoe/Douglas Counties also will host a unique presentation focused on issues affecting today's youth and families. The organization notes that one in five Americans live with a mental health condition, and most major mental illnesses begin to present themselves by age 14. Among Colorado’s youth — ages 10 to 24 — suicide is the second leading cause of death. Sixty-four percent of teens between the ages of 12 and 17 experience depression. The societal stigma associated with mental health and illness remains the biggest impediment to people for seeking and getting the proper medical care.
General admission to the event is $50 per person, or $35 per person for school administrators, government employees and NAMI members. Seating is limited, and advance reservations are recommended.
